Protesters Carried Casket, Chanted ‘Buhari Must Go’ Before Hoodlums’ Attack On Benin Prison

There was palpable tension in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Monday after hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state and unleashed chaos on a correctional facility in the state.

An unconfirmed number of inmates were said to have escaped when the hoodlums attacked Oko Prison along the Benin-Sapele road.

Prior to the hoodlums’ attack, some protesters had matched through the state capital carrying a casket and chanting ‘Buhari must go’.

THE WHISTLER reports that there has been civil unrest in parts of the country since October 3, when youths started taking to the streets to demand an end to alleged extra-judicial killings and rights abuses by operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

#EndSARS, which started as mere calls for the federal government to scrap the police unit, had since evolved into mass protests against what the protesters called ‘bad governance’.

The movement has gained international attention, with no fewer than eight foreign politicians, musicians and football stars lending their voices to the cause.
