PSG Coach Emery Announces Departure From Club

Paris Saint-Germain Manager, Unai Emery, on Friday announced he will quit as manager of the French champions at the end the season.

Emery is out of contract in the summer, with PSG not showing any sign of renewing his contract.

“I have communicated to the players that I am leaving,” Emery said in a statement.

“I thank President Nasser Al Khelaifi, the director of sport Antero Henrique, the supporters and all the players for these two seasons,” he added.

The 46-year-old’s decision may not be unconnected with the club’s disappointing season in Europe, failing to progress beyond the last 16 of the Champions League.

In his two year reign as manager, the French club have twice been eliminated at the last-16 stage of the competition, going down to Real Madrid this term having embarrassingly been beaten 6-1 by Barcelona to exit last season’s tournament.

The Parisian side finished second behind Monaco in Emery’s first season in charge but defeated the champions 7-1 on 15 April to claim their fifth league title in six years.

He has so far overseen 109 matches with PSG, winning 86, drawing 12 and losing only 11.

Under his guidance, the PSG have conceded 306 goals and conceded only 86.

Meanwhile, former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel – who has been linked with Arsenal – has been strongly linked with replacing Emery.
