Psychologist Warns S/East Youths Against Consumption Of ‘Mkpurumiri’

The consumption of methamphetamine, popularly known as mkpurummiri, is capable of destroying a generation of the youths, Dr Ezikiel Chukwu, a social psychologist, warned Wednesday.

Chukwu, while reacting to the manner that youths, mainly in the Southeast, are getting addicted to the hard substance, told THE WHISTLER in Enugu that, “The substance is capable of ruining the future of many youths. It makes them feel less concerned about life. It makes them live in a faulty world. The consequence is the birth of a failed generation.”

He called on religious bodies, traditional rulers, schools and parents to educate their children and wards on the dangers of the substance.

In his words, “This is where sound parental upbringing comes in. We should make ourselves the role models of our children. Let’s love them so that they can discuss their problems with their parents. By so doing, peer influences will be noticed early and wrong ones tackled before they escalate beyond control.”

Meanwhile, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tuesday, said it was clamping down on the consumption of mkpurumiri.

Its Ebonyi State commander, Mr Isah Adoro, stated this at a security workshop organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Abakaliki.

Mr Adoro stated that, “Drug abuse should not be treated as a political issue but a socio-economical issue. The use of mkpurummiri is already banned in Ebonyi; we call on the public to join the campaign train to overcome the intake of such drugs.”
