Rape Scandal: Angry Nigerians Blast CAN For ‘Showing Solidarity’ With COZA Pastor

A trending video which depicts the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as “showing solidarity” with pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) over the rape allegation against him, has sparked outrage on Twitter.

In the video, some representatives of CAN which included the FCT chairman of the Christian body, Jonah Samson, and CAN’s North Central president, Reverend Israel Akanji, were seen addressing a congregation at COZA and assuring them that the Christian body was with them.

“I assure you that we are with you and we will continue to be with you. We are in support of the church. We are in support of your pastor. We stand by him. and this church will continue to match forward. Therefore, I declare that the gates of hell shall not prevail against this church in the mighty name of Jesus” said Reverend Jonah.

CAN’s visit to COZA is coming weeks after Busola Dakolo, the wife of singer Timi Dakola, granted an explosive interview where she accused Fatoyinbo of raping her twice while she was a teenager.

The rape scandal had led Fatoyinbo to step down from mounting the church’s pulpit pending the outcome of investigations in the matter.

But despite that no investigation had been concluded or made public on the matter, CAN visited the church to show solidarity with Fatoyinbo, thereby sparking reactions on Twitter:

Meanwhile, CAN had previously said COZA as a church is not a member of the Christian body.

“The association recognises that COZA, to the best of our knowledge, is not a member of any of the families that belong to CAN. CAN, as an association; it is equally sad that there have been recurrent allegations of rape and infidelity against some gospel ministers and other Christians as well,” CAN ational director of legal and public affairs, Kwamkur Vondip, had recently said in a statement.

“While efforts must be made to get to the root of the matter through thorough investigation, the association condemns totally, any act of infidelity either by a pastor or any member of the church of God,” Vondip had said.
