Released Journalist Slams N200m Suit On Nigerian Government

Mr Jones Abiri, the journalist who reportedly spent about two years in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) without trial, has sued the Nigerian Government for N200 million.

Mr Abiri made his demand known in a suit he filed before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, following his release few weeks back.

According to earlier reports, the DSS had arrested and detained the Bayelsa-based journalist in July 2018 over alleged connection with armed militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

He’s however asking the court to compel the DSS to compensate him for the abuse of his rights and torture he underwent during his detention in their facility.

Abiri’s application was submitted to the said court by his lead counsel, Mr Femi Falana, who alleged gross violation of the personal liberty, dignity of person, freedom of association and fair hearing of his client by the Service.

The suit has been billed for further hearing on September 3.
