Reps Postpone Probe Of $195m Waterways Contract To Israeli Firm

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, on Thursday, adjourned its probe of the $195 million waterways security concession to an Israeli security firm by the Nigerian Government.

Recall that the government plans to cede the management and security of the waterways to HLSI Security Firm and Technology.

The move had drawn condemnation from some civil society organisations who petitioned the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, alleging that the Ministry of Transport was putting the nation’s security at risk by allowing foreigners manage its waterways.

The committee had consequently summoned the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, and the Nigerian Navy to explain their individual roles in the planned concession.

But the sitting on Wednesday was adjourned to January 17, 2018, after representatives of the Navy told the panel that they had not been served copies of the petition.
