Reuben Abati Protests ‘Attack On Erection Industry’ By Ghana Police Chief

Reuben Abati, a former media aide to ex-Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, has frowned at a statement by Ghana’s regional police commander in Accra, Afful Boakye-Yiadom, asking policemen in the country to reduce their sexual activities in order to be fit for the 2020 Ghanaian general elections.

A video where Boakye-Yiadom was seen asking the officers to preserve energy by eating well and reducing their ‘sexual rounds’ had gone viral on the internet.

Boakye-Yiadom had said, “Control yourself, we all need the energy to work during the election. I, therefore, advise all of you to eat well, reduce your sexual rounds for you to get the energy to work well before, during and after 2020 elections.”

But speaking on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Wednesday, Abati described the Ghanaian police chief’s call as “an attack on the erection industry”.

Abati, who was the 2019 deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, said Boakye-Yiadom was invading on peoples’ privacy as the call “is not part of police work”.

He said, “…from the point of view of a charge to the troops, because he’s a police chief, he wants his team to be disciplined, he wants them to eat well. Nutrition is very important. If you eat well, you’ll be able to work, he wants them to be prepared for the elections and you know that the elections in Ghana will be hotly contested. Two main candidates – Nana Akufo-Addo the incumbent president and John Mahama, who is also coming back. So, it’s a very important election for Ghanaians. So, at that level, you know it’s okay to inspire his troops.”

Abati, however, said, “But the point about ‘sexual rounds’…that’s how he called it. I think it is phallocentric, it smacks of phallophobia and it’s an attack on the erection industry.

“I don’t know how this police chief is invading people’s privacy on the basis of just a statement that has not been tested scientifically.”

Abating added that, “…as an assault on the erection industry, that’s not part of police work. Is he going to say the same thing about female police women in Ghana? Are they not going to be part of the election?”
