Revert To Old Fuel Price, SERAP Tells FG After Reversal Of Electricity Tariff

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged the federal government to reverse the recent hike in fuel pump price.

The call came moments after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions, in the early hours of Monday, temporarily suspended their strike scheduled for today following an agreement reached with the federal government.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, had disclosed that the agreement was reached after the federal government agreed to suspend the hike in electricity tariff for two weeks.

“The federal government and labour reach agreement at 2:53am. Deregulation to stay as government rolls out palliatives for labour (details in 2 weeks); Electricity tariffs suspended by govt for 2 weeks with a joint committee headed by @fkeyamo to examine the justification for the new policy. Strike suspended,” he tweeted.

But, SERAP took to its Twitter handle, demanding for reduction in fuel price as well.

“Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now.
Drop increase in fuel price now. Nigeria,” SERAP tweeted.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that SERAP had frowned at the decision of the federal government to increase the price of fuel, calling it an unfair treatment to Nigerians who were still battling with the economic implications of the Covid-19 lockdown.

“We urge President Buhari to immediately reverse proposed upward review of the retail pump price of petrol from N121.50 to between N140.80 and N143.80 per litre.

“Increasing fuel price in the middle of COVID-19 is unfair, illegal and a grave violation of human rights,” SERAP stated.
