Rivers Police Issue One Week Ultimatum For Surrender Of Illegal Firearms

The Rivers State Police Command has issued a one week ultimatum to all those in possession of illegal firearms to return them to the appropriate quarters.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni revealed this to THE WHISTLER on Tuesday.

He said “the mop up of arms is not target at any group in particular in the state but to the general public.

“The directive is from the Inspector General f Police (IGP) to all states including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

“So far, it is only one vigilance group that has surrendered their arms to the Police.

“The essence of the exercise was for all who bear or desire to bear Firearms do so legally.”

The PRO said only the Choba OSPAC Vigilance Group has submitted their firearms, adding that the window was still open for other groups to turn in their arms to prevent arrest.

“The idea is nobody should bear arms without the proper procedure, if you have in your possession arms without the proper procedure then you have fallen foul of the law and you will be punished accordingly,” he said

He said the Commissioner of Police has given one week ultimatum to those illegally in possession of arms to surrender them, stressing that the IGP’s directive would be enforced with immediate effect.
