Samson Siasia: ‘Not Good For Nigeria Football’ Fans React To FIFA Life Ban

The life ban handed former Nigeria Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, by FIFA on Friday has sparked reactions on social media.

FIFA, in a statement by its ethics committee, announced that Siasia had been banned for life from all football activities. It said the proceedings against Mr. Siasia were initiated on 11 February 2019.

According to the statement, the former football striker was found “guilty of having accepted that he would receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics.”

The football body said, “the adjudicatory chamber found that Mr. Siasia had breached art. 11 (Bribery) of the 2009 edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics and banned him for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level,” adding that, “a fine in the amount of CHF 50,000 has been imposed on Mr. Siasia. The decision was notified to Mr. Siasia today, the date on which the ban comes into force.”

Siasia coached the Nigeria national team from 2010 to 2011 and was reappointed in 2016.

Some Nigerian football fans took to Twitter to express shock and disappointment at the news, while decrying the negative image the development will create for football in the country.
