While assessing the performance of the governor in 2021, some residents who spoke to this website lamented the worsening security situation in several parts of the state.

Aminu Inuwa, a 45 year old civil servant said the state government has to do more to assure residents of the security of their lives and properties.

“Our government is sleeping, bandits are taking over different parts of the state. In Shiroro Local Government, for example, people can not go about their lawful activities, and the governor does not seem to be concerned,” he said.

For Annas , a teacher under the N-power interventionist scheme, the Incessant cases of kidnapping in the state is a cause for concern.

According to him, “Niger state has become the hotbed of kidnapping, you can’t travel from Minna to several parts of the state without the fear that you can be kidnapped by bandits. The Governor has failed, woefully.”

For Igbatigbi Zekeri, the issue of security is not the governor’s responsibility alone.

“It is very pathetic and unfortunate that we found ourselves in this situation. Security is everyone’s business but unfortunately, the attitude of some people is worrisome and disheartening that they have to sabotage the fight against banditry.

“Many of these criminals live among the community,  they know them and yet keep shielding them. Some security personnel are not also left out and even the village heads. The govt should not relent but do more in finding lasting solution to this menace,” he said

Aliyu Mummin, a student of the College of Education Minna, condemned the way government handled its impasse with the National Examinations Council (NECO).

“Government should try as much as possible to settle the NECO debt. Candidates are missing admission due to inability to upload O’level result.

“We are appealing to the government to try their possible best,” he added

Similarly, Hajara Usman , a petty trader at Kure market, lamented that the decision of NECO to withhold the results of students from Niger state was a failure of the state government.

“The national headquarters of NECO is in Minna here, why would the results of our children be withheld?” she queried.

Another resident who identified himself as Abdul said the government should declare state of emergency in education sector in Niger State.

“The schools are in dilapidated state and too much ghost workers and teachers with fake certificates are on the rise in the ministry of education. This isn’t a good sign for a better future.”

Abdul also condemned the decision of the state government to prohibit commercial motorcycles describing it as inconsiderate.

“A lot of people are getting their daily bread from their Okada, it is unfair of the governor to just place a ban on it, how will the affected persons feed their families, and pay children’s school fees? The decision is going to create another security problem for the state, because the people will be left with no option than to resort to crime.”
