Scientists Reveal How Coronavirus Attacks Human Body

Scientists have said that coronavirus could damage the kidney of infected persons and destroy their immune system.

 Professor of biology at Kingston University in London, Mark Fielder, said that the COVID-19 which is known to cause serious lung damage and severe pneumonia, attacks by attaching to the lungs of infected persons and reproducing in tissue inside the lungs of the patient.

The virus kills the cells as it spreads, the more the spread, the more cells are killed. The dead cells drop on the lungs’ lining and consequently build in clumps inside the organs.

According to Fielder, the clumps however make it difficult for infected persons to breathe and would also make the body more prone to infections.

The virus overdrives the immune system when fighting infections, which could cause swelling and breathing difficulties as well.

When the virus causes severe infection, it might lead to damage of the, “stomach, intestines, heart, liver and kidneys, and even provoke organ failure.”

The biologist told Sky News that the virus specifically attacks the goblet cells and ciliated cells.

The cells help keep the inside of the lungs moist, also helps clear the lungs from debris like dust or bacteria.

He added that the attack on the immune system could also worsen the symptoms of the coronavirus as it would damage healthy tissue while it attempts to stop the virus.

The expert revealed further that the virus might also damage other internal organs.

Although coronavirus patients have damaged liver and kidney, researchers said that there is no direct evidence that links the virus to it.

Similarly, Laura Evans, a scientist at the University of Washington, said that a large percentage of people with severe COVID-19 infections developed issue with other organs of the body.

The Coronavirus has since January infected over 90,000, with 3000 deaths recorded. While Nigeria recorded its first case on Friday, but the Ministry of Health said the infected person was responding to treatment.
