SDP Disowns Omisore, ‘We’re Not In Support Of APC’

The headquarters of the Social Democratic Party has stated that it was not carried along in the decision of its Osun governorship candidate, Iyiola Omisore, to support the All Progressive Congress in Thursday’s rerun.

The statement was made after Omisore, yesterday declared support for the ruling party.

“We have accepted to support the APC for victory in the rerun election tomorrow and thereafter form a coalition government.

“Our conclusion to form a coalition government is based on the party that is ready to work with SDP to adopt and implement the core values of our party,” Omisore had said.

But the party in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Alfa Mohammed, emphatically said it does not support the decision.

“The SDP would like to make it categorically clear that the national leadership of the party was not part of the recent developments involving our party’s gubernatorial candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore of Osun State, and the conclusions arrived at.

“We remain irrevocably committed to serving the Nigerian people on the basis of the vision, principles and goals of social democracy which underlie the philosophy of our great party, the SDP,” it said in a terse statement.

Recall that in the election held Saturday, Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 254,698 votes to beat his APC rival, Gboyega Oyetola, who polled 254,345 votes.

Omisore polled 128,049 votes to come third.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared the election inconclusive and fixed a rerun election for today, Thursday.

The decision was because the difference (353) between the two leading parties, PDP and APC, is less than the number of cancelled votes (3,498).

Omisore had initially pledged to pitch his tent with the PDP for the supplementary election after the party sought his support.

But in a twist of event, Omisore, after a meeting with top APC leaders, announced that the SDP will assist the APC defeat the PDP.

It was gathered that part of the irresistible offers made by the APC to Omisore includes Senate presidency if President Muhammadu Buhari is reelected into office.
