It is Nigeria’s highest finish in the last three years after they ended 2023 in 42nd position, and 2024 in 44th position.

In November, the Super Eagles defeated Gabon 4-1 after extra time in the World Cup qualifiers, and suffered a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to DR. Congo.

According to FIFA’s ranking data, the Super Eagles’ highest-ever position is fifth, while their lowest is 82nd.

Tunisia, ranked 41st in the world, Côte d’Ivoire, ranked 42nd, Mali, ranked 53rd, DR Congo, ranked 56th, and Cameroon, ranked 57th, are among the other African teams in the top 10 on the continent.

The top 10 remain unchanged with Spain leading the pack followed by Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Croatia. The next rankings will be published on Jan. 19.

The breakdown of the top 50 by confederation at the close of 2025 is consistent with 2024.

UEFA accounts for 26 nations, CONMEBOL and CAF each have seven (CONMEBOL down by one), Concacaf and the AFC both have five (Concacaf up by one), and the OFC has none.

The Super Eagles will take on Tanzania in the Nations Cup on Tuesday at 6:30 pm Nigerian time.
