S’East Would’ve Witnessed Another Holocaust, But For God’s Intervention – Ikpeazu

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, says the south-east would have witnessed what he described as “the greatest bloodbath in history”, but for God’s intervention.

Speaking on Sunday when he visited the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, Ikpeazu said proscription of the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) by governors of the south-east states was a step in the right direction.

According to him, the lives of “over 11 million” Igbo people scattered across northern states would have been endangered if the crisis in the south-east had gone out of hand.

The governor also sympathized with journalists over the attack on their secretariat by men of the Nigerian Army.

Recall that soldiers of the Nigerian Army had on Tuesday last week invaded the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State, beating up some reporters.

Appealing to the union over the incident, the governor said, “Though you didn’t deserve what happened, it is part of the hazards of the profession (journalism).”

“God has intervened in what could have been the greatest bloodbath in the history of the whole world,” he said.

“What could have been a holocaust has been averted.

“If the face-off had continued, the attendant reprisal attacks would have led to massive bloodbath.”

He commended the army for demonstrating “rare humility” by apologising for the invasion of NUJ press centre and restoring the damaged items.

Ikpeazu however frowned at the negative attraction the security situation has brought to the state, especially at a time his administration is on verge of establishing three industrial parks in the state.
