Senate Complies With Court Order Nullifying Omo-Agege’s Suspension

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday lifted the 90 days suspension it handed Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the Delta Central Senatorial District.

Recall that the Senate had recently suspended Omo-Agege after he accused its leadership of aiming at President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election by trying to reorder the sequence of the 2019 general election.

The Senator had consequently approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the Senate’s decision to suspend him from the upper legislative chamber.

In a ruling, the High Court nullified Omo-Agege’s suspension, accusing the Senate of not following due process in the matter.

Although the Senate had filed “a stay of execution” at the Appeal Court, the Red Chamber said it has decided to allow Omo-Agege resume plenary because it is “an institution that obeys the law”.

The Senate tweeted on Tuesday: “The Senate’s Position on the Senator Omo-Agege Suspension: “As an institution that obeys the law and court orders, the Senate has decided that it will comply with the judgement of the Federal High Court… pending the determination of the application for a stay of execution.”

Meanwhile, Senator Omo-Agege was linked with some hoodlums who invaded the Senate and stole its Mace after the Delta lawmaker was suspended.

The Senate committee investigating the matter is yet to come up with its findings on the case.
