Senate Moves To Abolish Fixed Charges On Electricity In Nigeria

The Senate has urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to abolish the fixed charges collected from electricity consumers in the country.

This came after a plenary session by the Lawmakers to review the activities and operations of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria since its inception.

The Senate then directed the PHCN to guide the distribution companies to discontinue to make consumers pay for poles and transformers, which are properties of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

The Lawmakers expressing their displeasure on the current state of power supply across the country said that their expectation on the privatization of the power sector has gone worse, this came after some lawmakers narrated situations of the epileptic state of power supply in their constituencies, labeling the Distribution Companies as corrupt in their operations.

The Lawmakers then urged consumers to always give notice of the items they acquire to the Distribution Companies, and in turn the Distribution Companies should recuperate their charges from successive consumption of electricity.
