The Senate has expressed their desire to cut down the salaries and wages of lawmakers in the National Assembly, this is due to the present economic state of the nation.

This was disclosed by the chairman, Senate ad-hoc committee on information, Senator Dino Melaye who insisted the committee responsible for the reviewing of lawmakers salary had already submitted the report.

Though against the motion, lawmakers salary should be cut, Senator Melaye said senators had already been directed by the Senate President to reduce their salaries as they needed to sacrifice for the nation.

“The Senate president said we must sacrifice, as we cannot carry out proper oversight of the MDAs (ministries, departments and agencies) if we have not made proper sacrifice.”

He went ahead and insisted that the period of non-compliance of senate resolve was over as the senate is set to set up a re-valuation and monitoring committee to follow up on all senate resolve and ensure strict compliance by all agencies.

He dismissed suggestions surrounding the position of the Senate chief whip, saying the South West are yet to submit the name of its preferred candidate, and that the 8th Senate is now bent on developmental issues of the nation.

He further said that the committee responsible for setting the agenda of the 8th Senate is yet to submit its report, but hopeful it will be submitted very soon.
