Senate To Screen, Confirm Onnoghen As CJN Wednesday

Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, will on Wednesday appear before the Senate for his screening and confirmation hearing, Senate President, Bukola Saraki has said.

Saraki, who disclosed this at plenary on Tuesday, added that the exercise will commence by 11am tomorrow, Wednesday.

Recall that Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on February 8, 2017, forwarded Mr. Onnoghen’s name to the Senate for confirmation as a substantive CJN, following the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed last year.

Onnoghen, 67, who hails from Cross River State has been the country’s judiciary in acting capacity since November 10 when he was so appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as acting CJN, on recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

His acting capacity for three months was to elapse on February 10, 2017, a situation that raised numerous controversies from different corners.

Meanwhile, the Senate is yet to reveal date for screening and confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
