SERAP To Buhari: Prove OBJ Is Corrupt, Accusing Him Not Enough

President Muhammadu Buhari has been challenged by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to substantiate his claim that indeed $16 billion electricity fund was mismanaged under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s leadership.

SERAP’s charge to Buhari comes after the president, on Tuesday, quarried the uprightness in the spending of the said sum under Obasanjo’s civilian rule.

The President had suggested that $16 billion meant for the power sector was misappropriated under Obasanjo’s watch when he asked “Where was the power after a former president claimed to have spent $16 billion on the project?” on Tuesday.

Even though Obasanjo has quickly dismissed the claim by referring Buhari to his book titled “my watch”, SERAP is challenging the president to probe perceived corruption in previous administrations.

“We have consistently maintained the position that previous regimes have misappropriated large sums of money on projects. What should happen is that the President must look into this vacuum and bring whoever is involved to justice. Nigerians insist that impunity must not continue,” said SERAP’s Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni.

“People must be held accountable for what happened in their regimes, no matter how highly placed they are. It does not matter who the corrupt former leaders now associate with. If the President agrees with us that there is indeed misappropriation, the government should move to bring the culpable people to book.”
