Sevilla Confirm Head Coach Eduardo Berizzo Has Prostrate Cancer
Sevilla FC confirmed on Wednesday that their head coach Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, just hours after they came from 3-0 down to draw with Liverpool in the Champions League.
Sevilla were 3-0 down at the break, but a double from Wissam Ben Yedder and an injury-time goal from Guido Pizarro secured an equalizer in the 3-3 draw, with Spanish media suggesting Berizzo told his players of his diagnosis at half-time in Tuesday’s game at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Sevilla’s players rushed to their 54-year-old Coach after Guido Pizarro scored the equaliser.
“The medical services of Sevilla FC can inform that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate,” the club said in a statement on its website.
“Further tests will determine which steps to follow regarding his treatment.”
Berizzo was appointed head coach in the summer on a two-year deal, following a three-year stint at Celta Vigo.
The club statement wished the 48-year-old Argentine a speedy recovery.
“Sevilla FC wants to show their full support to the coach right now and wishes him a speedy recovery.”
Sevilla are fifth in LaLiga with 22 points from 12 matches, while they are second in Champions League Group E with 11 points and one match to play in the group stages.
