Sevilla Ends Real Madrid’s 40-Match Unbeaten Run

Stevan Jovetic’s dramatic stoppage time winner ended Real Madrid’s 40-match unbeaten run in the Spanish La-Liga on Sunday night.

Sergio Ramos’ 85th minute own goal and a stunner from the ex-Manchester City man secured a 2-1 for the host at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to hand Zinedine Zidane’s side their first defeat since 6 April.

Cristiano Ronaldo had put the visitors ahead with a penalty after Dani Carvajal had been fouled by Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico. The Portuguese has now found the back of the net 21 times in just 13 appearances against Sevilla.

Ramos own goal levelled matters five minutes to time, before Stevan Jovetic marked his maiden league appearance for Sevilla with the winner in the 91st minute.

Jovetic curled a shot from outside the box to beat Real’s shot stopper Kaylor Navas from distance to win it. Navas, who appeared to be out of position, could only parry Jovetic’s effort into the bottom corner.

The victory means Jorge Sampaoli’s side have now won eight of their nine home games this season, which lifts them above Barcelona and into second, a point behind Madrid who have a game in hand.

Real Madrid are still well placed to be crowned champions of Spain for the first time in five years.
