Snapchat Launches New Tool ‘Story Explorer’

Photo and video messaging app, Snapchat is adding a new feature to the live video section of its app, which lets users get deeper into Stories and view related images that were taken at the same location, the company has announced.

The feature is intended to give users deeper looks at live events by giving them the option to see more than one Snap taken at a particular time.

Snapchat is using artificial intelligence, a group of expensive computers, to study and choose the content shown in ‘Story Explorer’.

Snapchat employees will still be the ones picking the Stories highlighted in Live Story, which is a list of snaps submitted by users. These chosen stories were curated by the Snapchat team, in collaboration with the event coordinators.

For example, if you’re watching a Snapchat Story of a football game and want to see a touchdown from another angle, you’ll see a new “Explore” tab at the bottom of certain Snaps. Swipe up and you’ll be able to see more Snaps about the same event.

To view additional footage, users can swipe up on individual Snaps within a Story and see about 10 additional clips.

Announcing the new feature via a blog post, Snapchat said: “It’s the first time you’ll be able to experience that incredible game-winning dunk from thousands of perspectives throughout the stadium – or feel like you’re right there on the scene when breaking news unfolds.”

Speaking to Los Angeles Times, the CEO of Snapchat Evan Spiegel said, “When a user sees a moment that is inspiring or exciting, they can swipe up to explore similar ones.

“The basic idea was we don’t provide any depth inside stories – you’re on the red carpet.

“It was a feeling of ‘show me more,’ and we’re fortunate that we just get so much video submitted to us that we had the ability from a content perspective to provide depth.”

Snapchat is rolling the feature out to New York City and Los Angeles at first, but says it will make it available in more cities very soon.
