After Soldier Defection, North Korea Digs Trench At Border

North Korea has begun plans to strengthen its border in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) with the South, days after one of its soldiers defected by running across the zone.

A picture posted by Marc Knapper, chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Seoul, shows North Korea workers digging a trench at the border, same spot the defected soldier used.

The soldier was shot multiple times, by North Korea border guards, as he tried to escape on foot, following the breakdown of his car.

The defector was rescued by South Korea soldiers.

According to footage released by the United Nations, the soldier would have succeeded in escaping with his car if it hadn’t broken down as they were no visible fences, or barriers at the border of two countries at war with each other.
