Southampton Sack Manager Mark Hughes After 1 Win In 14 Premier League Matches

Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Southampton FC, despite earning a 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Saturday, the Saints are third from bottom in the Premier League table with nine points from 14 matches.

Southampton confirmed the move in a statement on Monday, “We would like to express our thanks to Mark and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Mary’s.

“The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already underway.”

Before the draw against Man United, Southampton were beaten 3-2 by relegation rivals Fulham and knocked out of the EFL Cup on penalties by Leicester.

Along with Hughes, assistant first-team manager Mark Bowen and Coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

55-year-old Hughes took over at St Mary’s last March and guided them to Premier League survival and an FA Cup semi-final but was unable to inspire a better campaign this time around. The Saints currently reside in the bottom three after 14 games, of which they have lost seven.

Hughes is the second managerial departure of the 2018/19 season after Slavisa Jokanovic, who was replaced by Claudio Ranieri at Fulham last month.

Kelvin Davis who is the first-team assistant coach will take charge of the team for the game against Tottenham on Wednesday.
