Study has shown that while speaking in front of an audience can be a challenge for some people, there are people who are born with a stammering or speech disorder.

This disorder has been reported to affect about 1% of the population with the notion that it is a big issue.

On how to address the problem, the Stammer Foundation  noted that  people who stammer  have  a unique opportunity to create listeners.

Speaking in a panel discussion on the anatomy of stammering and its effect on mental health, at the conference held at the National Human Right Commission in Abuja, former NERC Chairman, Sam Amadi and other panellists noted that though stammering starts from childhood for some, at times it may be caused by trauma.

The panelist noted that the disorder can be tackled during childhood with the help of parents letting their children see the bright side and positivity in stuttering.

On his own part, a former minister of communication, Shittu Adebayo said “having stammerers as friends or relatives shouldn’t be an issue to us instead we should have a positive view towards stammerers/stutters.

The Foundation, however, urged the public to help the people with stammering disorder gain back their confidence by giving them all the support and encouragement they need.

Stammer Foundation  founded in May 2018 by Juliana Imam and other Trustees aims to build an inclusive society with equality, equity and economic empowerment for person that stammer
