Stop Overheating The Polity, NUJ Warns

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over the siege to the National Assembly, calling on politicians to stop overheating the polity.

National Secretary of the union, Shuaibu Usman Leman, in a statement on Wednesday said the NUJ views with concern the current political situation in the country especially events of the past few days and calls for restrain on the part of the political leaders and their agents on both sides of the seeming conflict.

“We equally warn against the defiant disregard for the rule of law which appears to be fuelling so much ill feelings in the country. The restriction of arbitrary exercise of power is germane in a democracy,” Leman said.

“We appeal to Nigerian politicians to stop overheating the polity ahead of the 2019 elections, because the rising political tension in the country was uncalled for.

“We charge politicians to focus more on the business of governance for which they were elected into office, instead of dissipating energy on unnecessary political rumblings.

“We believe that various untoward actions being exhibited by some politicians are in bad taste and are capable of causing harm to the electoral process. It is therefore pertinent to appeal for caution on the part of some of these political gladiators especially as we move toward 2019 elections,” the statement further said.
