Uruguay scored a late goal to defeat the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 at the 2018 World Cup, group A game at the Central Stadium, Yekaterinburg, Russia on Friday.

Jose Gimenez headed home in the 89th minute to give the South Americans a vital 3 points ahead of their next game against Saudi Arabia.

Sanchez delivered a free kick from the right and 23-year-old Atlético Madrid defender headed into the right hand corner to deny Egypt their first point at the Mundial.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was declared fit the day before the game but was dropped from the starting XI for their first match against the South Americans.

Egypt came into the tournament as Africa’s most successful side – winning seven African Nations cups. However, they haven’t as yet transformed that form to the World Cup – this is their first appearance at the tournament for 28 years.
