Not less than seven female students were confirmed dead, and 26 others injured following a fire outbreak at Government Girls Secondary School, Jogana in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, on Sunday night.
A statement signed by the Director of Press in the Deputy Governor’s office, Alhaji Usman Bello, on Monday, said that the injured students are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The statement explained that the Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, had since visited the school and the hospital where the victims were receiving medical attention.
“The state government has also condoled with the parents of the deceased and wished the injured quick recovery.
“The state government has ordered the immediate closure of the school to enable the students and parents manage the trauma,” it said.
According to the statement, the state government would soon set up a technical committee to investigate the cause of the incident and advise on how to prevent future occurrence.
