Abia Group Calls For Release Of Abaribe

A pan-Abia group, Ala Abia, has called for the release of Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe who is being detained by the Department of State Security for undisclosed reason.

The group in a statement on Saturday in Abuja said the gestapo nature of Abaribe’s arrest calls for concern, noting that the country was gradually sliding into anarchy.

In a statement signed by Chioma Amajor, Ala Abia expressed the worry over the rough-shod tactics being employed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to hound those in the opposition, stressing that it goes against the grain of the rule of law and social order.

“We must confess that the arrest of Senator Abaribe who has maintained a principled stance against some of the overreach of this regime has not come as a surprise to us given that prominent Nigerians have raised the alarm of a grand design by the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest and incarcerate leaders of the opposition on trumped up charges, to keep them out of circulation and inoperative as we prepare for next year’s elections.

“Whatever the motive is for the arrest of Senator Abaribe, we implore the DSS and other arms of the security architecture to note that their loyalty should be to Nigeria and not any party or individual, therefore, the Service should come out clean why Senator Abaribe is being held as well as ensure that if there is anything against him, he should be charged to court without delay,

“For the avoidance of doubt, the law of the fundamental rights of Nigerians is clear and no agency of government, no matter how powerful it thinks, can be more powerful than the Nigerian constitution.

“Let the APC and DSS be mindful that the eyes of the civilized world is on them and sooner or later, they shall be held accountable for all their extra-constitutional actions,” Amajor said in the statement.

According to her, all well-meaning Nigerians should speak up against the creeping dictatorship before nothing is left of Nigerians who hold contrary opinions to those of the regime in power
