AFCON 2019: Nigeria To Face South Africa, Libya In Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been drawn alongside rivals, South Africa, Libya and Seychelles in the qualification route to the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroun.

Cameroon will be hosting Africa’s biggest football event for the first time in 45 years, having last hosted in 1972, an edition which was won by Congo.

Drawn in Group E, in the draws conducted on Thursday, Gernot Rohr’s men will have to overcome the threat posed by Bafana Bafana, with the top team in each of the 12 pools and the three best runners-up advancing to the finals.

The three time African champions failed to qualify for the 2015 edition after failing to beat South Africa in their final game of the qualifiers in Uyo. Nigeria have failed to make the continental competition in three of the last four editions, after also missing the 2012 and 2017 edition.

This year’s AFCON begins on Saturday in Libreville, Gabon.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles moved a place up to 50th spot in the first football ranking for the year, released by the world football governing body on Thursday.

The Eagles are also the 7th best playing nation in Africa.
