The Ghana Football Association have confirmed that Avram Grant will leave his role as head coach when his contract expires on 28th February.

“Avram Grant has informed the Ghana Football Association of his decision to step down as head coach of the Black Stars,” Osei Kwaku Palmer, a member of Ghana’s FA executive committee said.

The 62-year-old, who was appointed in November 2014, said it’s time to move on to a “new challenge”.

Grant’s resignation comes five days after his side crashed out in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations to eventual winners Cameroon.

The former Chelsea and West Ham boss led the Black Stars to the final of the 2015 AFCON, where they lost on penalties to Ivory Coast.

“After an extremely amicable meeting with the president of Ghana FA, and following more than two successful years in charge of the national team, I’ve informed Mr Nyantakyi that time is right for me to move on to a new challenge and I thank him for the opportunity,” Grant said, according to Sky Sports.

“I’ve hugely enjoyed my time in Ghana taking over after the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign and rebuilding the squad to reach the final in the African Cup of Nations for only the second time in 23 years, and also the semi final of this year’s competition.

“I’m proud of the fact that I’m leaving an extremely professional, strong squad of players of a good age, who I’m sure will go on to achieve great success in the future.

“The passion and loyalty of the supporters is something I’ll always remember.”

Reports have it that Ghana’s assistant coach, Maxwell Konadu is line to take over from Avram Grant, as the acting coach of the senior male national football team of Ghana on a temporary basis.

In his 29 games in charge of the Black Stars, Grant won 14 , drew 8 and lost 7.
