Andrea Pirlo Says ‘Goodbye’ To Football

Former Juventus, AC Milan and Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo on Monday announced his retirement from football after a successful career which saw him win the 2006 World Cup, two Champions League titles and six Serie A titles.

The 38-year-old legend who began his career at Brescia, made a late appearance for his club New York City against Columbus Crew on Sunday, a day before announcing the end of his playing career.

Not only [is it that] my adventure in New York comes to an end but my journey as a football player as well,” he said.

In a statement posted on his Twitter account, Pirlo also thanked “every team that I had the honour to play for” and “every team-mate that I have been pleased to play alongside”.

Pirlo had 116 caps for Italy, scoring 13 goals, during a 13-year career until 2015, the 38-year-old played his final two years with Major League Soccer side.

“Everyone at New York City FC would like to congratulate Andrea on an incredible career and to thank him for his excellent contribution to NYCFC over the past two and a half years.” the club said
