Arsenal Board has backed manager Arsene Wenger to take the club forward following Arsenal’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday.

Speaking at the AGM, Arsenal’s American owner Stan Kroenke commended the Frenchman for his performance, urging the manager to secure his fourth Premier League crown this season.

He was presented with a portrait to mark his 20 years in charge.

The Gunners last won the trophy in 2004 after a historic 49-match unbeaten league run from May 2003 to October 2004.

He said, “It’s great to be here and wonderful day. Arsene you’ve always shown commitment, dedication and energy and you brought a new style to English football and our club.

“Also in a world of great scrutiny and pressure you’ve always handled yourself with class.

“We know we will compete for trophies and always have and would like nothing better than to see you win the championship this year.

“You should be proud of the last 20 years.”

Speaking on a new contract for the Arsenal boss, Chairman Sir Chips Keswick noted that the Frenchman’s “future will be discussed at an appropriate time”.

Wenger, who recently celebrated 20 years in the job is inside the final year of his current deal and has repeatedly said he will not consider his future until the end of the season.

“We all recognise the fantastic contribution Arsene has made to club in the last 20 years,” Keswick was quoted by the Daily Mirror.

“We are confident about his ability to take us forward. We will sit down and discuss the future at the appropriate time but our focus is on maintaining the current run and competing for trophies.”

Also Speaking, Wenger reiterated his desire to claim the Premier League title this season, after narrowly missing out on several occasions.

He said: “I believe the team has the commitment, togetherness, hunger, desire and unity and we have a good chance to compete for the Premier League.

“Our challenge is to compete for everything because I believe we have a squad that is more mature and better equipped to cope with all the challenges we have.

“That is the target and I am absolutely committed to fulfil and give my best so that we are successful until the end of the season. Let’s meet these challenges together.”

Arsenal host Reading in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, looking to bounce back having been held to a disappointing 0-0 home draw by Middlesbrough on Saturday, which ended their run of seven consecutive victories in all competitions.
