Arsenal have completed the signing of Switzerland international Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach for a fee of around £35million.

The 23-year-old midfielder passed his medical ahead of his move to the Emirate Stadium, on a five-year contract worth £110,000-per-week.

The midfielder will join the Gunners after the transfer window opens next week.

“We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad,” Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said. “We wish Granit a good Euro 2016 with Switzerland and look forward to welcoming him to Arsenal ahead of next season.”

Xhaka, who has played 41 games for Switzerland, can play as a central midfielder or in the more attacking positions behind the striker.

Asked whether he felt Arsenal could compete for the Premier League title next season, Xhaka said: ‘I hope so. I am very happy to be here. It’s a dream come true and I’m happy.

“I remember I was young and the first game I watched was in the Premier League. It’s a big dream for me and now that I’m here I am very, very happy.

“I like the style of football in the Premier League,’ Xhaka said. It’s aggressive and I like the way Arsenal play football. It’s not like other countries but it’s very nice here.

“In Germany you can play aggressively but the referee will always blow his whistle, but in England that’s not the case. That’s better for me.

He becomes Arsenal’s third most expensive signing behind Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
