The leader of Save Awgu Forum, Emperor Baywood Ibe, yesterday in Enugu declared that the next governor of Enugu state must be an Awgu extraction. Emperor Ibe said the declaration had become necessary because of the level of marginalization meted to his people by both state and federal governments.

“Awgu people have been marginalized in the polity of the state. We have never produced any government office-holder at both state and federal levels. There are no government institutions in Awgu. My people face unemployment and penury because of this negligence. The objective of our forum is to emancipate our people from the shackles of political and economic marginalization.

Awgu is among the oldest local government areas in Nigeria but remains the most marginalized and underdeveloped. We have declared that we shall use every lawfulmeans to ensure that the next governor of Enugu state, after Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, comes from Awgu,” he said.

Emperor Ibe also commended President Mohammad Buhari in his efforts to eradicate corruption in the country. According to him, corruption has become endemic and requires the courage of Buhari to stamp it out. He condemned Nigerians who stash funds abroad, describing it as unfortunate.

He also urged Buhari to entrench free and fair elections in Nigeria to deepen the country’s nascent democracy. On the recent trip by the president overseas, Emperor Ibe said the result had been tremendous.

“The nation’s integrity is being restored overseas. This is the first time that some countries are willing to assist Nigeria to fight corruption. Stealing public funds and stashing them abroad have become non-functional because those countries where our leaders hitherto keep the stolen funds have started returning them to the coffers of the country,” he said.
