The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Bayelsa governorship rerun election in Southern Ijaw LGA will take place on January 9th, 2016.
The electoral body made this decision on Thursday after meeting with leaders of political parties which fielded candidates in the December 5 governorship election, which was declared inconclusive following cases of violence and election irregularities.
The meeting also called for the neutrality of the security agencies and emphasized that the lead agency in the election should be the Nigerian Police.
Results from this rerun will determine who becomes the next governor of the state. The main contenders in the election are the incumbent governor, Seriake Dickson of PDP and former governor Timpre Sylva of APC.
Seriake Dickson garnered 105,748 votes ahead Timipre Sylva, his APC counterpart, had 71,794 votes, leaving a difference of 33,954 between them against the 120,827 registered voters.
