Benue Cancels Mass Burial Ahead Of Buhari’s Visit

The Benue State government has cancelled the planned mass burial for victims of the Fulani herdsmen attack in Okpokwu.

No fewer than 24 persons, mostly women and children, were killed in a fresh crisis at Omusu Edimoga in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attackers had invaded the community after they reportedly lost their cattle and two herdsmen.

The Cable reports that Samuel Ortom, governor of the state, had ordered that the victims of the attack, which occurred on Monday, be buried this Friday.

However, in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, said the burial would not be holding this Friday as announced.

“There wouldn’t be mass burial of victims of Fulani herdsmen attacks in Okpokwu,” he said.

“A church service, followed by burial of the victims, will take place on Thursday, next week at Okpokwu,” Akase added.

The statement added that the burial will now take place next week Thursday.

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom announced earlier that President Muhammad Buhari will be visiting the state on Monday.
