The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has declared Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The three-man panel of judges presiding over the case in a unanimous decision on Friday declared the former Borno State Governor as the authentic National Chairman of the party.

The ruling by the panel ultimately brings an end to the leadership crisis that has rocked the party for months. Factional leaders Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff have both laid claim to head the major opposition party in the country.
Both former senators had before today’s judgement agreed to accept the outcome of the Appeal Court judgement in a bid to bring peace to the party.

Prior to the February 17 judgement, both chieftains of the party expressed readiness to abide by the outcome of the Appeal Court verdict with a view to bringing lasting peace in the party.

The verdict also nullifies the May 21 election of Makarfi as PDP chairman at the party’s convention in Port-Harcourt.

Recall that a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had last year given legitimacy to Makarfi as the chairman of the party, while another court of coordinate jurisdiction in Abuja, headed by Justice Okon Abang, ruled that Sheriff should be recognised as the chairman.

In an indefinite adjournment on December 16, 2016, the Abuja appeal court maintained that its Port Harcourt division should be allowed to deliver the final judgement on the case.
