Breaking: El Rufai Committee On Restructuring Recommends State Police, Prisons

Six months after being set up, the ten-member committee to articulate the All Progressives Congress (APC) position on restructuring submitted its report on Thursday to the National Working Committee of the party.

The committee headed by Kaduna state governor, Nasir el-Rufa’I has recommended for more devolution of powers to the states, specifically, urging that the police and prisons be moved from the exclusive to the concurrent list.

The committee equally recommended independent candidacy but with a caveat that individuals who intend to stand for elections must not have been a member of any political party at least six months to the elections in which they intend to contest.

On local government autonomy, the committee said since “one size does not fit all”, the states should be allowed to legislate for local governments, including creating more councils.

Other members of the committee include Rauf Aregbesola, governor of Osun; Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, governor of Kano; Simon Lalong, governor of Plateau, Ibikunle Amosun, governor of Ogun and Oserheimen Osunbod, former governor of Edo.

Others are Osita Izunaso, national organising secretary; Bolaji Abdullahi, Hajiya Fatima Balla as well as Olubunmi Adetunmbi (secretary).
