BREAKING: Transparency Int’l Indicts Buhari’s Govt Of Deepening Corruption In Nigeria

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has been indicted by Transparency International of worsening corruption level in Nigeria since taking over from the Goodluck Jonathan regime in 2015.

The 2017 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released on Wednesday by the global anti-corruption watchdog indicates that corruption in the country has been bloated under Buhari.

The report revealed that the current administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which met Nigeria’s corruption score and rank at 27/100 and 136th respectively, has taken the country 12 places below.

Transparency International now ranks Nigeria 148, with a CPI of 27, a figure lower than the average in the Sub-Sharan region.

The WHISTLER reports that it was under the Jonathan regime that Nigeria made its best ranking of 136 from a previous position of 143.

Meanwhile, CPI score, which ranges between 100 (highly clean) and 0 (highly corrupt), shows how business people perceive corruption in a given country.

The global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption further revealed that despite efforts being made by the Nigerian government to curb corruption, the menace has continued to widen.

Speaking in the official report on Wednesday, Transparency International’s Managing Director, Patricia Moreira, said:

“Over the last six years, several countries significantly improved their CPI score, including Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and the United Kingdom, while several countries declined, including Syria, Yemen and Australia.

“This year, New Zealand and Denmark rank highest with scores of 89 and 88 respectively. Syria, South Sudan and Somalia rank lowest with scores of 14, 12 and 9 respectively.

“Western Europe was ranked the best performing region with an average score of 66. The worst performing regions are Sub-Saharan Africa (average score 32) and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (average score 34).

On the freedom of press, Moreira said, “No activist or reporter should have to fear for their lives when speaking out against corruption. Given current crackdowns on both civil society and the media worldwide, we need to do more to protect those who speak up.

“Even more alarming, further analysis of the index results indicates that countries with the lowest protections for press and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) also tend to have the worst rates of corruption.”

THE WHISTLER notes, however, that Nigeria’s new corruption perception has dealt the Buhari regime a blow in spite of the anti-corruption watchword of the current government.
