Buhari Bows To Pressure, Orders AGF To Probe Babachir, Magu

This may not be the best of times for President Muhammadu Buhari as he bows to pressure to probe two of his top men who have been levelled with “gross” corruption allegations.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Garba Shehu, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has been instructed by the President to commence the immediate probe of top government officials who have been accused of being corrupt.

THE WHISTLER recalls, however, that two of President Buhari’s top officials, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and the Acting Chairman of the anti-graft (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, were last week indicted of being corrupt in separate reports by the Nigerian Senate and the Department of State Security (DSS), respectively.

“The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media, in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the administration,” Shehu said on Sunday.

“In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them are liable they will not escape prosecution.”

SGF Lawal may be investigated for allegedly siphoning government funds from non-executed contracts in the north-east, while EFCC boss Magu may face probe for several corruption allegations, including possessing undeclared pieces of landed property.
