The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Monday, said that the independence of Nigerian Universities, under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, has come under sever attack.

Dr. Christopher Piwuna, chairman of ASUU, UNIJOS chapter, at a public lecture tagged “Labouring Backwards: The Plight of the Working Class Under Economic Recession,” said that education sector under Buhari’s administration has continued to go down the drain.

“Under the current leadership, the autonomy of the universities have come under serious attack with the removal of Vice Chancellors and the dissolution of governing councils becoming the norm,” Piwuna said.

He also warned that the union may be forced to withdraw its services if the Federal Government continues to hold on to remaining balance of their earned allowances, a special welfare package for academic staffs of the union.

“The president should have no one to blame other than his officials in the education sector as National Executive Council of the union (NEC) meet this week to decide on whether we should withdraw our services across the country.

“The train is gathering steam and only a responsive ministry of education and the presidency can stop us,” he added.
