Buhari Okays Fresh Investigation Into Bola Ige’s Murder

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the re-opening of the murder case of Chief Bola Ige, a former Attorney General of the Federation.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, had sought approval from the President for fresh investigation into the murder of Ige who was killed on December 23, 2001 in his Ibadan residence.

This is in line with the IGP’s new initiative to position the police force as being capable of resolving all previously abandoned politically-motivated murder cases in Nigeria.

A source who pleaded anonymity told a national newspaper that the acting IGP has set up a Special Investigation Panel to look into the case, re-arraign and prosecute suspects earlier arrested in connection with the murder of the former Minister of Justice.

“The truth is that President Buhari did not order the reopening of the murder cases.

“The decision was solely taken by the new police management led by the Acting IGP.

“The belief of the police management is that investigations into the cases were carried out shoddily, hence the need to revisit them.

“Naturally, the President will not go against such a decision but he was not the one that ordered the reopening of the cases.” the source added.

Recall that former deputy governor of Osun State, Iyiola Omisore, who is currently facing corruption charges in court, was a key suspect in the Bola Ige murder case.

In other news, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, on July 17, ordered on-the-spot probe of the immediate past IGP, Solomon Arase (retd), over the disappearance of about 24 vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force.
