The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will back Ahmad Ahmad as he seeks to head the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in next month’s election, NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, has said.

Ahmad, who is currently the head of Madagascar’s FA, will challenge long-serving President Issa Hayatou at the CAF election which is billed for March 16, 2017, in Ethiopia.

Mr. Hayatou is standing for an eighth successive term as CAF President, but faces strong opposition from Ahmad.

Speaking to the BBC on Tuesday, Pinnick said the election will be “a defining moment for African football”, while he described Ahmad as “courageous” for coming out to challenge Mr Hayatou.

He said just like the world football governing body, FIFA, that CAF also needs a “new generation” of leadership.

The NFF President pointed out that the country will work with Mr. Hayatou if he wins next month’s election.

You have to listen to a larger audience instead of just a tiny cabal, you have to know it goes beyond you,” Pinnick said.

“I will definitely work with him if he wins but my prayer is we need a bridge builder and that person is Ahmad.”
