Chelsea Cruise Past Saints To Close In On Title

Diego Costa scored a brace as Chelsea go seven points clear at the top of the English Premier League, after a convincing 4-2 victory over Southampton.

Antonio Conte’s men were the better side as they ran out victors against the Saints at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, to edge closer to the EPL title.

Eden Hazard put the Blues ahead with a low strike before Oriol Romeu levelled proceedings.

Southampton threatened an upset, but Gary Cahill’s goal just before the break put the league leaders back in front.

Diego Costa nodded in and then scored a well-taken second to take his side seven points clear of second place Tottenham, who travel to in-form Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

The Spaniard has now notched 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea. It has taken him just 85 games to get there, having notched at an impressive rate for the Blues since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2014.

He managed 20 in his first season in English football, with 12 added last term and another 19 in the current campaign.

Ryan Bertrand pulled one back for the visitors in added time but it was too little too late. The former Chelsea player rose magnificently above Cahill to meet a cross by Cédric and head into the net from 10 yards.

Chelsea’s next game is a trip to Everton on Sunday, with a win there almost guaranteeing them the league title.
