Commonwealth Games: Roland Ezuruike, Esther Onyema Win Gold For Nigeria

Team Nigeria has won its first gold medal at the ongoing 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Roland Ezuruike provided the golden moment, after he lifted 224.3kg in the para powerlifting lightweight category on Tuesday.

While countryman Paul Kehinde claimed the silver medal with a 219.9kg lift and England’s Ali Jawad won the bronze with a lift of 182.7kg.

Recall that Ezuruike set a new Paralympics record in the men’s 54kg category after lifting 200kg at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He also had claimed the silver medal in the men’s 72kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

More so, in the women’s category, Nigeria set new games record for the women’s under 50kg.

Esther Oyema, Nigerian lightweight para powerlifter, broke the world record to win a gold medal at the event.

Lucy Ejike, another Nigerian, won the silver medal for Nigeria with a lift of 131.4kg.

So far, Team Nigeria is ranked 10th on the Medal Standings, as they have won 3-Gold and 4-Silver medals, while Australia leads the medal log with 41-Gold, 34-Silver and 34-Bronze medals.

South Africa is 5th on the Medal Standings with 8-Gold, 5-Silver and 5-Bronze medals.
