Dr Fidelis Odo, Executive Chairman of Igboeze South local government, Enugu State, has lauded the Federal Fire Service, Nsukka, for promptly putting out a fire outbreak at the Orie-Igboeze market.

The fire believed to have radiated from the fish frying section of the market had gutted several open shops.

Odo, however, commended operatives of the Fire Service for curbing the fire before it spread beyond open cooked-food shops in the market.

The chairman also pledged the council’s support for victims of the fire incident.

He said,“At the council level, we would assist the victims. I have also instructed the market office to document those affected and forward it to my office. I will also communicate the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency for further disaster mitigation.”

Commending the Fire Service officials, Odo said, “Specifically, I extol Enugu State Gov Ifeanyi Ugwanyi which made the rapid response possible. In the past, complaints of broken down vehicles, no diesel, and no water used to mar similar operations. The rapid response of fire service is highly commendable.”

An eyewitness at the scene of the incident said, “Although no life was lost, there was minimal damage to approximately twenty shops with cooking utensils, food items, and condiments. It would have destroyed more but for the timely intervention.”
