Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected as the new President of South Africa.

The 65 year old was elected by South Africa’s Parliament on Thursday.

Ramaphosa succeeds Jacob Zuma, who resigned under pressure on Wednesday.

The ANC had told Mr Zuma to step down or face a vote of no-confidence.

In a televised statement on Wednesday, the troubled Zuma said he was quitting with immediate effect but disagreed with the party’s decision.

Mr Zuma faces numerous corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.
