Diego Simeone Extends Atletico Madrid Stay

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a new two-year contract with the Spanish La Liga club.

The Argentine international was appointed in 2011 and helped Atletico to win the La Liga in 2014, he also won the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, Europa League and UEFA Cup as well as reaching two Champions League finals, both of which ended in defeats by rivals Real Madrid.

Simeone has recorded 200 wins, drawn 67 and lost 54 in the 321 games he has managed.

The 47-year-old who has won a total 5 trophies at the club, renewed his contract to 2020 in 2015, but agreed to a 2-year reduction on that in September 2016.

The renewal of Diego Pablo Simeone is now a reality,” Atletico said in a statement.
“Our coach has signed a new contract that ties him to Atletico Madrid for two more seasons, until June 30, 2020.

“He started his seventh campaign as Atletico manager this season, the coach in La Liga with the most time at the helm of his team, and only Arsene Wenger (at Arsenal) beats him in terms of elite European sides,” Atletico added.
